Product details EC 101 P Enso Pearl

The Enso Pearl was designed to be the ultimate timer. Use it for your meditation, yoga, or reiki session or during therapy, teaching or traveling. Salubrion created an innovative method for conveying time using the Japanese Enso. Enso, which means circle in Japanese, symbolizes enlightenment, elegance, and the universe. Traditionally, the enso is painted with a single clockwise brushstroke. The Enso is gradually brushed on-screen as time progresses. You can glance at the Enso and see the relative amount of time that has elapsed, eliminating the distraction of focusing on the exact numerical time that remains.

More about the Salubrion EC 101 P Enso Pearl

The Enso Pearl features Interval Timing in which you can create sequential timers that run one-after-the-other to compose an overall session. Set a custom sequence that mirrors your personal practice to guide you. The Enso Pearl also features a new Repeat Timing function for multiple repetitions of a single timer. You may also count-up like a stop watch with the Enso Pearl. The timers may all be set in hours, minutes, and seconds.

At the end of each interval or timer, one of several available soothing chimes is played. Chimes are recorded from Tibetan and Japanese singing bowls as used in traditional meditation sessions. Using the latest audio technology, the Enso Pearl's reproduction of the singing bowl chimes is of the highest quality and virtually indistinguishable from the original.

In addition to the Timer, Salubrion's clock can be used as an Alarm Clock, featuring the same soothing chimes. The clock can be placed flat on the floor in front of you for use during seated meditation, or propped up using the elegant hinged stand that folds out of the back of the clock to place on your night stand. Each Enso Pearl includes a convenient carrying case with an integrated cleaning cloth that both protects and polishes.

This little device is just what I was hoping it would be. Great for a gentle morning wake-up, a gentle end to sitting practice, and a wonderful timer for Yin Yoga practice with, in my case, 10 three-minute holding intervals each followed by a 1-minute resting interval. This is just what I wanted and it fits the bill. I did not find it hard to set up at all, and I confess that I have trouble with programming my digital watch--so there you go. There are only two things I would recommend altering in the design. The first would be the font of the numbers themselves...they are quite thin and small and can not be read from very far away. I would make them bolder for easier reading from a distance. Maybe not a stopwatch font, but something a little more fluid (though I don't know what the mechanical limitations are on this). Also, the little plastic stand that comes out of the back and keeps it upright--I would make that a wee bit wider because it is easily knocked over by the hand reaching in the dark to turn it off in the morning. Those things would make it perfect for me, but I really like it as is. And yes, I realize this is seriously defeating the purpose of an Enso clock, but I kind of wish it was square or rectangular so it wouldn't be so tippy. Maybe an optional model sans the circular display that was flat on the bottom...

The bottom line is that--problems aside--I really like it and would replace it immediately and without hesitation if I lost it.

Might just be one of the very rare alarm clocks or timers that doesn't suck (and was actually thoughtfully designed), but I experienced a few problems. It's three chime sounds are very nice, especially compared the hard beeps of most alarms and timers, and the ring timer display is interesting. Ultimately, however, I don't know if it is quite worth $100, at least for my needs. The build quality (especially the buttons and the look of the display) is slightly less than I was hoping. In fact my clock was defective, and I had some serious problems communicating with Salubrion about it, though they eventually got back to me with a refund etc and resolved the problem completely. So mixed feelings -- pretty good idea and design, a bit problematic in my individual experience. If it has all the features you are looking for (timers, visual progress, size and shape [note, includes a very nice carrying case], and fits your budget, then you could give it a try.
